England Windsor

Windsor

Windsor is not only a popular destination because of its remarkable history, it is also home to two of the biggest tourist attractions in the country. Windsor Castle is of course one of them and the other slightly more modern attraction is Legoland Windsor. These may be the biggest draws in the area but there is much more to see, such as Eton College, Ascot Racecourse and the Savill Gardens.

Despite the feeling that Windsor is historically an old place, it doesn’t mean that it has grown old in itself, as there is much here for the younger generation of visitors to enjoy. Those with a love of the outdoors will also find that there are a range of activities on offer to suit all tastes and abilities. Should you be looking to enjoy a more relaxed break in this wonderful part of the country take the time to enjoy a romantic trip through Windsor Great Park in the back of a horse drawn carriage, or take a boat trip along the river and watch the world drift slowly by.

The Royal Connection

One of the unique attractions that draws visitors to Windsor is the spectacle of the changing of the guard. Unlike the changing of the guard that takes place at Buckingham Palace, at Windsor Castle you can get closer, see more and get up close to the guards themselves and their incredible marching band. The castle of course is the place to go to get a taste of royalty, it is not only the largest but also the oldest occupied castle anywhere in the world, and is still the official residence of the Queen. The castle has a history that spans a millennia and has had an incredible influence over the development of the town of Windsor as it is today.

Windsor Castle

No visit to the town would be complete without taking time to visit the castle. You will be able to view the incredible state rooms that all contain items from the royal collection and should you choose to visit during the winter months you will find that there are an additional five state rooms open to the public. St Georges Chapel is a wonderfully atmospheric place to spend a few moments, not only is it one of the most beautiful chapels in the country it is also the final resting place of not one, but ten former monarchs.

One of the most popular attractions in the castle is the incredible dolls house that once belonged to Queen Mary, a perfect reproduction in miniature of a stunning royal residence. The Drawings Gallery holds regular exhibitions throughout the year for you to view and enjoy, and of course there are the stunning castle grounds too. Visit at Christmas and you will get a sense of what Christmas were like when Queen Victoria made her home here as the state dining room will see the table laid out in spectacular style for a traditional Victorian Christmas, and the Christmas trees situated in the castle are quite spectacular to behold.
